The Ekiti State Police Command has successfully foiled a planned kidnapping operation and arrested two suspects, who allegedly intended to fund the abduction by selling two stolen cows. The intelligence-led operation, which took place on Saturday, 4 July 2026, at about 1:00 p.m., led to the apprehension of the suspects in a forest along the Are-Afao Road/Ayede-Ekiti axis.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, in Ado-Ekiti. According to the statement, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, working in collaboration with officers from the Ayede-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters and local vigilantes, arrested Mumini Muhammed, 23, and Kehinde Oseni, 22.

Abutu explained that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects had concluded plans to kidnap a resident of Ayede-Ekiti before they were intercepted. They were caught while attempting to sell two stolen cows for ₦1.5 million, with the proceeds allegedly intended to finance the planned kidnapping.

The police spokesman confirmed that the suspects have confessed to the crime and made useful statements to investigators. He added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover firearms and other weapons allegedly in their possession.

The recovered cattle have been identified and released to their owner, Abutu said. The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Falade Adegoroye, reaffirmed the command's commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations against kidnapping and other violent crimes. He urged residents to remain law-abiding and continue to support the police with timely and credible information to combat crime across the state.
