Troops of the 17 Brigade, Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in collaboration with hybrid security forces, have successfully foiled a planned terrorist attack on commuters along the Kakumi–Guga Road in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing eight suspected terrorists. The operation, which took place on Thursday, 9 July 2026, followed credible intelligence indicating that terrorists loyal to a notorious kingpin identified as Idi Abasu Aiki were planning to block the road and attack unsuspecting motorists and other road users.
According to military sources, the suspected terrorists were sighted advancing towards the target area on five motorcycles, prompting troops and hybrid forces to swiftly mobilise and lay a well-coordinated ambush along their likely route. The Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 17 Brigade, Captain Abayomi Adisa, confirmed that the operation was based on actionable intelligence, and that the troops acted decisively to neutralise the threat.
The terrorists unknowingly entered the ambush, triggering a fierce gun battle that ended with the neutralisation of eight of the assailants. Following the operation, troops conducted a thorough exploitation of the area, recovering two AK-47 rifles and five motorcycles allegedly used by the terrorists during the operation. The recovered weapons and motorcycles were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Division in Bakori for further investigation and necessary action.
The military described the operation as a significant success, underscoring the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in degrading terrorist and bandit networks across the North-West. The collaboration between conventional troops and hybrid forces enhanced operational planning through better knowledge of the terrain and movement routes. Military authorities noted that the operation prevented what could have been a deadly attack on innocent commuters travelling along the road.
Following the successful ambush, troops deployed at Forward Operating Bases in Ruwan Godiya and Mabai have intensified aggressive patrols and area domination operations along suspected routes leading to the affected communities to deny criminals freedom of action and protect law-abiding residents. The military has also sustained aggressive patrols and surveillance across the area to prevent any retaliatory attacks on nearby communities and commuters, as Operation FANSAN YAMMA continues efforts to restrict the movement of terrorist groups across Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations aimed at protecting lives, securing communities, and restoring lasting peace across Katsina State and the wider North-West. Residents have been assured that the security situation in the area is being closely monitored, and troops remain on high alert to forestall any further threats and sustain ongoing operations against terrorist groups operating in the state.
