Manchester United have officially announced the signing of experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer, bolstering their goalkeeping department ahead of the 2026/27 season. The Premier League club confirmed the move on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, through its verified X account, welcoming the Wales international with the message: "Welcome onboard, @KarlDarlow." The announcement was accompanied by official photographs showing Darlow holding a Manchester United shirt, signing his contract, and posing with club officials after completing the move.

The 35-year-old shot-stopper joins United after leaving Leeds United at the end of his contract, having spent the last three seasons at Elland Road where he established himself as the club's number-one goalkeeper last season, keeping five clean sheets in 24 appearances across all competitions. Darlow has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Old Trafford, running until June 2028, with the option to extend for a further year.

Speaking about his move, Darlow expressed his pride at joining the Red Devils. "I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands," Darlow told the club's website. "This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forwards."

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, welcomed the addition, saying: "Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group."

Darlow arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of Premier League experience, having made 279 senior appearances throughout his career, 74 of which have been in England's top flight. He previously spent nine years at Newcastle United and also had spells at Nottingham Forest and Hull City. His arrival is expected to provide valuable back-up and competition for United's current number one, Senne Lammens, especially with Andre Onana having re-joined Trabzonspor on loan and Altay Bayindir expected to leave the club permanently. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has also signed a new one-year deal to remain part of the goalkeeping group.

Darlow becomes Michael Carrick's second signing of the summer transfer window, following the confirmation of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday. United are also reportedly close to completing a £35 million move for Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.

The signing has been widely reported by reputable sports news organisations, including the Manchester Evening News, the Daily Mail, and Yahoo Sports, confirming the authenticity of the announcement.
