The Bauchi State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the death of a 20-year-old man, Abdullahi Adamu, following allegations that he was assaulted by police operatives during interrogation in Misau Local Government Area. In a statement issued on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, said the Command has become aware of reports circulating on social media alleging that officers attached to a police outpost under the Misau Division assaulted the victim while questioning him over a case under investigation.
According to the statement, Abdullahi Adamu, a resident of Sebore Village in Hardawa District, was initially admitted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Misau, before being referred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where he died while receiving treatment on Sunday, 12 July 2026. The police have not disclosed the nature of the case for which the deceased was being interrogated at the time of the alleged assault.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed concern over the allegations, stressing that the Command remains committed to professionalism, respect for human rights, and due process. "The Command takes issues of professionalism, respect for human rights, and due process very seriously," the commissioner said. He added that he had ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. "The Command is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be taken against any personnel found culpable in accordance with the provisions of the law," Aliyu stated.
The police commissioner also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the repose of his soul. The Command has appealed to members of the public with useful information that could assist the investigation to come forward and cooperate with the police. The incident has reignited concerns over police brutality and custodial deaths in Nigeria, where cases of alleged torture and extrajudicial killings by law enforcement officers have continued to generate public outcry despite repeated assurances of reform from authorities. Civil society organisations and human rights advocates have consistently called for greater accountability and an end to the culture of impunity within the Nigeria Police Force. As the investigation unfolds, the family of Abdullahi Adamu and the public await the outcome, hoping that the promise of justice will not be another empty pledge in a country where such promises have often gone unfulfilled.
