Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued an unidentified middle-aged man who was found unconscious along Oby Okoli Avenue, near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Temporary Site in Awka, the state capital, in what authorities suspect may be a case linked to hard drug abuse. The victim was discovered by police officers attached to the B Division during a midday patrol on July 15, 2026, lying by the roadside without any visible injuries or signs of violence. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the officers immediately evacuated the man to the Police Hospital in Awka, where he is currently receiving treatment.
A search conducted on the victim did not yield any means of identification or a mobile phone that could help in tracing his identity or relatives. Preliminary assessment by medical personnel suggests the man may have been under the influence of hard drugs, though investigations are ongoing. The command stated that efforts are ongoing to identify the victim and notify his family members for further necessary action.
SP Ikenga described the incident as another reminder of the dangers associated with substance abuse and drug addiction, particularly among young people. He reiterated that the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices remains committed to preventive policing through sustained advocacy, public enlightenment, and collaboration with stakeholders to discourage drug abuse, cultism, and other social vices. The command added that further developments on the matter would be communicated to the public in due course.
The rescue highlights the ongoing challenges posed by substance abuse in Anambra State and the police's commitment to public safety through routine patrols and community engagement. As the victim continues to receive medical care, authorities are appealing to members of the public with information that could help identify him or locate his relatives to come forward and assist with the investigation.
