At least three people have died and several others have been injured after a powerful rainstorm accompanied by strong winds swept through parts of Yobe State, leaving a trail of destruction across affected communities. The disaster destroyed homes, businesses and public infrastructure, forcing hundreds of residents from their homes as authorities began assessing the extent of the damage.
The latest incident occurred overnight on Thursday, 16 July, into Friday, 17 July 2026, when heavy rainfall and a windstorm battered Tsohon Nguru (Old Nguru), Filing Idi and other communities in Nguru Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses said the storm brought down houses, perimeter fences and other structures, leaving many families displaced and seeking shelter with relatives and in public buildings.
Eyewitness Bukar Adamu told Daily Trust that the rainstorm caused widespread devastation, destroying homes and other property worth millions of naira. He said many residents were left without shelter after the powerful winds ripped through buildings, while emergency responders and community members worked to assist those affected.
The disaster comes barely a week after another deadly windstorm struck Gashua, the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area, on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. According to Bade Local Government Chairman Ibrahim Babagana, the storm lasted about 30 minutes but claimed three lives, injured several others and destroyed hundreds of houses, shops, telecommunications infrastructure and electricity poles, leaving many residents homeless.
Mr Babagana described the earlier storm as one of the worst weather disasters the area had experienced in decades and appealed to the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide urgent relief materials for affected families. He said the scale of destruction was beyond the capacity of the local council to manage without state intervention.
The repeated incidents have heightened concerns over the impact of severe weather across northern Nigeria during the rainy season. Residents have called for swift humanitarian assistance for victims, while authorities continue assessing the damage and coordinating emergency relief efforts for affected communities.
