The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a teacher accused of allegedly flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, 16 July 2026, has sparked widespread concern over the safety and welfare of schoolchildren in the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, officers attached to the Neni Divisional Headquarters responded promptly after receiving a distress report on the evening of 16 July 2026. The victim was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead by a medical doctor while receiving medical care. The deceased's body has since been deposited in a hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed visible marks of violence on different parts of the child's body. Photographs of the injuries were taken as part of the ongoing investigation, while detectives continue gathering evidence to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased, citing the ongoing investigation.
The Police Command said it has activated its Safe School Initiative Operations, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo, to track down the fleeing teacher. According to SP Ikenga, the suspect fled after the incident, and officers have been directed to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
Expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, the Anambra State Police Command assured the public that it would conduct a thorough, diligent and transparent investigation into the case. The Command reiterated that schools must remain safe environments for learning and child development and stressed its commitment to protecting pupils through the Safe School Initiative.
The police have appealed to members of the public with credible information on the whereabouts of the fleeing suspect to report to the nearest police station or contact the Anambra State Police Command through its emergency line. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities promising to keep the public informed as new developments emerge.
