Four people have been arrested by the police in Akwa Ibom State over the alleged killing and secret burial of a man accused of stealing, in a case that has renewed concerns over the dangers of jungle justice and extrajudicial punishment in Nigeria.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, 16 July 2026, in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, after the deceased was allegedly accused of theft by members of the community. According to reports, the suspects allegedly took matters into their own hands instead of handing him over to security agencies for investigation, resulting in his death and subsequent secret burial.
