The widow of a police inspector who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Enugu State has made a desperate plea for justice, demanding the release of CCTV footage that could identify the vehicle and driver responsible for her husband's death. Mrs Ngozi Ishiwu-Obodo, wife of the late Dr Ikechukwu Obodo, a 45-year-old police inspector and PhD holder, shared her pain and the struggles of her three young children, who keep asking for their father. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 5, 2026, along Bisalla Road in Enugu.
According to the family, Dr Obodo had just disembarked from a commercial bus when a speeding convoy struck him and dragged his body for nearly half a kilometre before fleeing the scene. His widow recounted that she received a call from her husband's phone around 9 p.m., only to be informed by a stranger that he had been in an accident. When she arrived at the scene, police officers prevented her from seeing her husband, falsely claiming he was being taken to the hospital. He had died on impact.
Dr Obodo, a native of Nkpologu, Enugu State, served in the Operations Department of the Enugu State Police Command Headquarters. Despite earning a PhD, he remained a low-tier inspector because the police force allegedly did not recognise higher academic qualifications for promotion. His widow described the immense financial strain they endured to fund their education. He had submitted his credentials for evaluation following a police directive in late 2025 but died before the process was concluded.
The family has accused authorities of a cover-up and demanded the release of CCTV footage from cameras installed along Bisala Road. They argued that the delay in releasing the footage suggests the involvement of a high-ranking official's convoy. "The delay means that it is either the governor's convoy that committed the crime or another top government official," a family source said.
The Enugu State Police Command has denied that a police convoy was involved. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, stated there is no evidence to support the claim but assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway. The command has launched a manhunt for the driver of a commercial bus, but it is unclear if this is linked to the inspector's death.
The family has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to order a thorough investigation. “My husband was a diligent officer who discharged his duties with dedication. The manner in which the state command has handled his death has added to our grief,” the widow said. As the family continues to mourn, her children keep asking for their father.
