The University of Calabar has dismissed eight members of staff and sanctioned another with a two-year promotion delay following disciplinary actions approved at the institution's 174th Governing Council meeting held on July 3, 2026. The decision, which affects both teaching and non-teaching staff, was contained in a memo signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Mrs. Icha Chukwuka, and made available to journalists on July 18, 2026. The university described the action as a major step to enforce discipline and restore integrity in the institution.
Among those dismissed is Prof. Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science, who was sanctioned over alleged examination misconduct. Also affected are Mr. Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of Chemical Pathology, Mrs. Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi of Microbiology, Dr. Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of Internal Medicine, and Mrs. Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel, all dismissed for alleged absence from duty and abandonment of post.
The Works Department lost Mr. Joseph Edet Okon, who was dismissed over allegations of vandalising and carting away armoured cables belonging to the institution. Mr. Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry was dismissed for allegedly falsifying and altering examination results. In addition, Mr. Emmanuel Adariku of the UNICAL Alumni Relations Office was dismissed over the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from the "Friends of Malabor/Alumni Trust Funds" account.
While eight staff members lost their appointments, Dr. Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science received a lesser punishment. He was handed a two-year delay in promotion and ordered to forfeit 50 per cent of his withheld salary over negligence of duty linked to an examination misconduct case. The university management reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for all forms of unethical practices. "The administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Offiong, remains committed to rebranding the institution on the foundation of integrity, excellence in service delivery and zero tolerance for all forms of unethical practices," the statement read. The disciplinary action comes amid heightened scrutiny of ethical conduct among staff of tertiary institutions nationwide, with universities under pressure to clean up their systems following repeated public outcry over examination fraud, financial impropriety and abuse of office by both teaching and non-teaching staff.
