A night of terror unfolded in Barayar Zaki village, Kwargaba Ward, Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, when suspected bandits stormed the community, killing two people and leaving four others injured. The attackers, who struck on the night of July 19, 2026, also abducted an unspecified number of residents and rustled a large number of livestock before fleeing into the bush.
According to local sources, the bandits invaded the village, firing sporadically before moving from house to house in search of victims. The attack has once again plunged the community into mourning and heightened fears over the worsening insecurity that continues to plague the Sokoto East region. The exact number of those abducted remains unclear as of the time of filing this report, with families still searching for their loved ones.
The attack on Barayar Zaki is the latest in a series of bandit raids reported in parts of eastern Sokoto, where residents have continued to raise concerns over persistent insecurity. Just a day earlier, on July 18, bandits loyal to notorious leader Bello Turji attacked Kwaren Gamba community in Sabon Birni LGA, also killing two people, injuring three, and abducting several residents. In another incident, armed bandits on Friday night attacked Rimawa village in Goronyo LGA, shooting three residents and rustling cattle.
The attacks highlight the growing security challenges facing communities in Sokoto State, where bandits have continued to operate with impunity despite ongoing military operations. The Wurno LGA chairman had earlier raised the alarm, noting that residents were increasingly abandoning their homes at night due to rising bandit attacks. Residents have described Wurno as a persistent hotspot where vigilantes are often outgunned, and poor mobile network coverage delays distress calls.
Families have once again been left grieving, while many others are still searching for their loved ones. As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the attack, and the fate of those abducted remains unknown.
