The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a couple, Christian Chukwuka, 32, and his wife, Nwanneka Christian, 33, for allegedly operating a drug warehouse in a residential area along Sapele Road in Benin City, the state capital. The arrest, which took place on Monday, July 13, 2026, followed credible intelligence on the couple's criminal activities, according to the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju. The raid, which he described as one of the most significant drug busts recorded in the state, led to the seizure of 22 bags of skunk cannabis weighing 219.5 kilogrammes and compressed blocks of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of synthetic cannabis weighing 192.67 kilogrammes. The total weight of the seized illicit substances amounted to 412.17 kilogrammes.
Addressing journalists in a statement on Monday, July 20, 2026, Ofoyeju confirmed that the couple, who hail from Ndokwa in Delta State, were apprehended at the warehouse where they allegedly dealt in narcotic drugs. "We arrested a husband and wife, Christian Chukwuka, 32, and Nwanneka Christian, 33, at the illicit warehouse where they deal in narcotic drugs," Ofoyeju said. He added that the discovery highlights a growing concern regarding drug trafficking and illegal drug distribution in the state. "The arrest and seizure reflect growing concern over drug trafficking and abuse. Both suspects were apprehended at the warehouse," he stated, adding that investigations are ongoing and the suspects would soon be charged in court.
During interrogation, one of the suspects, Christian Chukwuka, attributed his involvement in drug trafficking to poverty and unemployment. He told investigators that he is a secondary school graduate who learnt how to drive trucks but, due to joblessness, a friend introduced him to the illicit trade. "My wife has a set of twins for me, and the pressure of financial upkeep has been a challenge. If given another chance, I promise not to deal in drugs again," he pleaded, according to the NDLEA commander.
Ofoyeju said the successful operation was based on credible intelligence and that the agency remains unwavering in its commitment to dismantling illegal drug operations and safeguarding communities. "Our efforts to combat drug trafficking remain unwavering. We will thoroughly investigate this case and ensure that justice is served," he said. The seizure, which involved both skunk cannabis and the synthetic strain Canadian Loud, represents a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the state and underscores the NDLEA's continued efforts to curb the menace of illicit substances across the country. The couple's arrest and the recovery of the drugs are part of the agency's ongoing nationwide operations aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks.
