The Office of the Minister of Defence has firmly dismissed as false a media report alleging that the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has expressed an intention to step down from his position. In a statement issued on Monday, July 20, 2026, the ministry described the report as false and borne out of complete mischief, insisting that the minister remains fully focused on his national security mandate and committed to his duties.
The statement, signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Leah Katung-Babatunde, urged the public to completely disregard what it described as fake news. It stressed that General Musa remains dedicated to piloting the nation's defence strategy, with results already being seen. "The general public is hereby urged to completely disregard this fake news," the statement read. "We strongly advise media outlets and internet users to desist from spreading unverified information and seek clarification from the office on matters concerning the minister".
The denial comes after a report alleging that the minister planned to resign from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's cabinet began circulating widely on social media. The ministry's statement described the speculation as malicious and entirely fabricated, confirming that General Christopher Musa remains in office and continues to carry out his responsibilities. The Federal Government, through the ministry, reiterated its position that the minister has no intention of stepping down.
The Defence Ministry also cautioned the public to exercise caution when consuming information on social media, warning that false reports can easily gain traction when shared without proper verification. The statement advised media organisations to desist from spreading unverified information and to seek clarifications from the office. The denial has been widely reported by several news outlets, all of which confirmed that the minister remains in office.
