Middlesbrough have secured a significant transfer breakthrough, agreeing a deal with Tottenham Hotspur for the permanent signing of highly-rated young striker Will Lankshear. The 21-year-old forward, who impressed during a loan spell at Oxford United last season, is now set to become Boro's third signing of the summer window after the arrivals of Myles Peart-Harris and Kyle Joseph. The deal is understood to be worth more than £10 million, with Boro beating off competition from several Championship rivals and Portuguese side Sporting CP to land the England youth international.
The Teesside club's recruitment team, led by head of football Kieran Scott, have been monitoring Lankshear for a number of years and held a series of productive discussions with Tottenham officials to agree the framework of a permanent transfer. The player's preference to secure regular first-team football on a permanent basis rather than embark on another temporary move proved decisive, with Boro presenting a clear pathway to consistent senior action. Lankshear, who joined Spurs from Sheffield United's academy in 2022 for around £2 million, has been unable to establish himself at first-team level in North London despite making his senior debut in a Europa League game in October 2024. He spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at West Bromwich Albion before a season-long loan at Oxford United last term, where he scored 12 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions despite the club's relegation from the Championship.
Tottenham are understood to retain faith in the player's potential and are expected to protect themselves in the structure of the agreement, with both a substantial sell-on clause and a buy-back option likely to be included in the deal. Lankshear's former Oxford boss Matt Bloomfield has previously described the marksman as a player capable of reaching "the top", praising his finishing, hold-up play and single-minded focus. For Middlesbrough, the signing adds a different profile of centre-forward to Kim Hellberg's squad, with the number nine noted for his physicality, strong finishing and ability to lead the line. The club acted quickly to reshape the squad following their play-off final disappointment last season, and Lankshear is expected to provide the attacking thrust needed for another promotion push. The agreement represents a significant statement of intent from Boro as they prepare for the new campaign, with the player's development and future sell-on value making the deal an attractive proposition for all parties involved.
