A devastating attack unfolded in Garin Idi community, located in Tarah Ward, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, when suspected bandits stormed the village on Monday night, injuring five residents and abducting more than 20 people, including men, women and children. The attack, which occurred on July 20, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the state, as Garin Idi is the ancestral hometown of Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Dr. Idris Mohammed Gobir, raising serious questions about the government's ability to protect even the communities of its most senior officials. According to a source close to the community, security personnel stationed in the area had vacated the town last week, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable to the marauders who struck under the cover of darkness.
The Deputy Governor had reportedly visited the town earlier on Monday morning accompanied by security officers to assess the situation, and was informed about the attack by community leaders. This was not the first time Garin Idi had been targeted. In a similar attack on May 1, 2026, bandits abducted eight residents, including relatives of the Deputy Governor. Residents have repeatedly expressed concern that despite their relationship with the Deputy Governor, the community continues to suffer repeated attacks without urgent intervention. The latest assault comes just days after bandits loyal to notorious leader Bello Turji killed two people, injured three others, and abducted several residents in Kwaren Gamba Community, also in Sabon Birni LGA, on July 18.
Sabon Birni remains one of the worst-hit areas by armed bandit groups that routinely raid villages, kill residents, rustle livestock and kidnap residents for ransom. The attack on Garin Idi follows a disturbing pattern of violence in the region, including an incident on July 16, 2026, when bandits killed three internally displaced persons and abducted more than 20 others in Gangara village, also in Sabon Birni LGA. The area, located near the border with Niger, has remained a hotspot for bandit activities, with communities enduring relentless raids that have forced many to abandon their farms and homes.
As of the time of this report, it could not be confirmed if there had been any communication between the bandits and the community regarding payment of ransom. The Sokoto State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the attack, though the police spokesperson had previously assured that efforts were in place to rescue victims of similar attacks. The attack on Garin Idi serves as a grim reminder that insecurity is reaching even the communities of top government officials, leaving ordinary Nigerians to wonder where they can truly feel safe. The cycle of violence, displacement and grief continues unabated, as communities in Sokoto State and across Nigeria's North-West region remain trapped in a relentless crisis that demands urgent and decisive action from authorities.
