Taraba State University, Jalingo, has apprehended two 300-level students from the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences, for allegedly smoking cannabis within the university premises. The arrests were carried out by officers of the university’s Directorate of Narcotics and Anti-Cultism during a routine operation on campus. According to reports, the students were intercepted after they were found in possession of substances suspected to be cannabis and were allegedly smoking openly within the university environment.
The Director of the Directorate of Narcotics and Anti-Cultism confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was part of the university’s sustained campaign against drug abuse and cult-related activities. He reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance policy on drug abuse and other activities capable of disrupting the peaceful academic environment. He added that the directorate would continue to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure the campus remains safe, secure, and conducive for teaching, learning, and research.
The matter has been referred to the appropriate university authorities for further investigation and any necessary disciplinary action in accordance with the institution’s rules and regulations. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to combating drug abuse, cultism, and other social vices on campus. According to him, the university will continue to strengthen preventive and enforcement measures aimed at promoting discipline, safeguarding students’ welfare, and maintaining a secure academic environment for all members of the university community.
The arrests come amid a broader crackdown on drug abuse in Taraba State. Between January and July 2026, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 2,530 kilograms of illicit drugs and arrested 382 suspects for drug-related offences in the state. The agency has called for stronger collaboration among government institutions and communities to address the growing challenge of drug abuse, particularly among young people. The NDLEA has also partnered with Taraba State University, commending the institution for establishing a full Directorate of Narcotics and Drug Abuse Prohibition and pledging support through capacity-building and training programmes.
Drug abuse has been identified as a growing concern on university campuses across Nigeria, with studies indicating that between 20 and 45 per cent of university students have used cannabis at some point. The NDLEA has warned that drug abuse is increasingly prevalent among young people, often driven by academic pressure, social expectations, and emotional challenges. In response, the agency has launched a national drug testing policy for schools, aimed at discouraging substance misuse among students.
The apprehension of the two students at Taraba State University underscores the institution's determination to enforce its anti-drug policies and maintain discipline on campus. As the investigation continues, the university has made it clear that it will not tolerate drug abuse or any other activities that compromise the safety and integrity of its academic environment.
