A Kaduna-based father of 11 children, Lawal Hamisu, has approached a Sharia court to compel his 27-year-old daughter, Fatima Lawal, to find a suitor and get married, in a case that has drawn significant attention to the intersection of parental authority, cultural expectations, and individual choice in northern Nigeria. Hamisu, through his counsel H.B. Debo, prayed the Shari'a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to intervene in what he described as his daughter's reluctance to settle down despite having multiple admirers.
The complainant told the court that his daughter, who holds a Higher National Diploma, has entertained different suitors but failed to bring any serious one forward for marriage. "She should get a suitor, present him in court, and the court should marry her off since her mother has poisoned their minds against me," the father said. The statement suggests a deep-seated family conflict, with the father alleging that the mother of his children has been influencing them against him.
In her defense, Fatima Lawal told the court that she has no serious suitor and that none of her admirers has actually proposed marriage. Her response highlights a potential disconnect between the father's perception of her social life and her own assessment of her romantic prospects.
Presiding Judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter, noting that it involves a parent and a child. Rather than issuing an immediate ruling, he stated that he would hold separate one-on-one discussions with both parties to better understand their perspectives and offer advice. The case has been adjourned to August 3, 2026, for a ruling.
The case has sparked discussions on social media and beyond, reflecting broader societal debates about marriage, parental authority, and individual rights.
