Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar has spoken publicly about her prolonged battle with serious health challenges, revealing that she endured years of illness, emotional pain and isolation while feeling abandoned by many people she once trusted.
The actress made the emotional disclosure during a Holy Ghost Revival programme in Lagos, where she shared what she described as a testimony of survival, healing and renewed faith after spending more than a decade battling life-threatening medical conditions.
According to Abubakar, her health crisis began about 13 years ago and progressively worsened, forcing her away from the entertainment industry and public life. She said the illness affected virtually every aspect of her life, including her acting career, finances, relationships and emotional well-being.
Recounting the difficult period, the actress said one of the most painful experiences was discovering that many people she had supported or regarded as friends distanced themselves from her during her darkest moments.
"Everybody left me to my fate," she said, explaining that she faced much of the struggle without the support she had expected from colleagues and acquaintances.
Abubakar said the experience taught her valuable lessons about life, friendship and resilience. She lamented what she described as a lack of genuine compassion and empathy within parts of the entertainment industry, noting that some people only remain close during times of success but disappear when difficulties arise.
She revealed that throughout her illness she underwent numerous medical treatments while enduring severe physical and emotional challenges. Although she did not dwell extensively on the medical details during her testimony, she explained that there were moments when her condition became so critical that she feared for her life.
The actress also spoke about the spiritual transformation that emerged from her experience. She announced that she has converted from Islam to Christianity, describing the decision as one of the most significant turning points in her life.
According to Abubakar, her renewed faith followed years of prayers and what she believes was a miraculous healing that restored both her health and hope. She credited Apostle Queen Belemzy and members of her ministry for standing by her through the difficult period and encouraging her spiritually when she felt she had nowhere else to turn.
She said surviving the ordeal convinced her that God had preserved her life for a greater purpose, adding that her recovery has strengthened her commitment to serving God and living a life centred on faith.
Abubakar also announced that she is preparing to return to Nollywood after spending several years away from movie production because of her health challenges. She said she is eager to resume acting but intends to be more selective about the roles and projects she accepts, ensuring they align with her renewed values and beliefs.
Her testimony comes months after she publicly appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance to support her medical treatment. At the time, she disclosed that she had exhausted much of her personal resources while battling illness and managing the high cost of healthcare.
The actress expressed gratitude to everyone who prayed for her, encouraged her and offered support during the most difficult moments of her life. She said those acts of kindness gave her strength to continue fighting despite the physical pain and emotional struggles she endured.
Halima Abubakar remains one of Nollywood's best-known actresses, having featured in numerous films over the years before her prolonged absence from the screen. Her latest appearance has generated widespread reactions from fans and colleagues, many of whom have welcomed her return and expressed relief at seeing her recover after years of uncertainty surrounding her health.
The actress said she hopes her story will inspire others facing serious health challenges or personal difficulties not to lose hope, stressing that perseverance, faith and determination helped her survive one of the most difficult chapters of her life.
