The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate evacuation of accumulated waste along the Egbeda and Igando corridor, directing that the clean-up operation be completed overnight as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and ensure cleaner public spaces across the state.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, following concerns over the growing volume of refuse along major roads and public areas in the Egbeda and Igando axis of Alimosho Local Government Area.
According to the commissioner, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and other relevant agencies were immediately mobilised to the affected locations with waste evacuation trucks and operational personnel to ensure that the accumulated refuse was cleared before the start of activities on Tuesday.
Wahab said the overnight operation was necessary to minimise traffic disruptions while restoring cleanliness to one of Lagos' busiest transport corridors. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment remains a top priority for the state government and forms part of its broader strategy to improve public health and environmental sustainability.
He also urged residents and business owners to support government efforts by disposing of their waste responsibly through approved channels and registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. He warned against dumping refuse on roads, road medians, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, noting that such practices contribute significantly to environmental pollution and flooding.
The commissioner reiterated that indiscriminate waste disposal remains one of the major causes of blocked drainage systems, especially during the rainy season, and appealed to residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
The latest evacuation exercise comes as the Lagos State Government continues to intensify efforts to strengthen waste management across the state. In recent months, authorities have increased refuse evacuation operations, expanded the deployment of waste collection vehicles and stepped up enforcement against environmental offenders.
The government has also continued public awareness campaigns encouraging residents to adopt proper waste disposal habits while working with waste management operators to improve the efficiency of refuse collection services in various communities.
Officials believe the clean-up operation in Egbeda and Igando will significantly improve sanitation in the affected areas, reduce environmental hazards and enhance the overall appearance of the communities.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cleaner and healthier Lagos, emphasising that sustained environmental sanitation requires cooperation between government agencies, waste management operators, businesses and residents.
Authorities also encouraged members of the public to report illegal waste dumping and other environmental violations to the appropriate agencies, stating that community participation remains essential to achieving a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos.
