Awka, Nigeria — Four herders from the same family have been killed after unidentified gunmen attacked a cattle settlement in Ifite Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in an incident that has heightened concerns over security in the area.
According to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), the victims were identified as Mohammed Bujumi, Hassan Bujumi, Abubakar Bujumi and Sani Bujumi, all members of the same family. The association said the men were at their cattle camp when the attackers stormed the settlement and opened fire on them.
MACBAN stated that after killing the four herders, the gunmen set the cattle camp ablaze, destroying structures within the settlement. The attackers also reportedly slaughtered several cows before fleeing the scene, leaving behind extensive destruction.
The association disclosed that the attacked settlement belonged to a cattle owner identified as Alhaji Aminu Mohammed. It added that another herder, Usman Iliyasu, survived the attack and is expected to assist security agencies with information that could aid ongoing investigations.
Reacting to the incident, officials of MACBAN condemned the killings, describing them as a brutal attack on innocent citizens. The association called on security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.
MACBAN also appealed to the Anambra State Government to strengthen security around communities where herders and farmers live and work, stressing the need to protect lives and property regardless of occupation, ethnicity or religious affiliation.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been officially established, and security authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the incident. Investigations are expected to continue as law enforcement agencies work to determine those responsible and the circumstances surrounding the killings.
The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of herding communities in parts of Anambra State and the wider South-East, where incidents involving armed groups and violent attacks have continued to pose serious security challenges.
Community leaders and stakeholders have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators. They also called for measures to prevent retaliatory violence and preserve peaceful coexistence among different groups living in the state.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity affecting rural communities across parts of Nigeria, with renewed calls for stronger intelligence gathering, improved policing and greater collaboration between security agencies and local communities to prevent further attacks.
