Osogbo, Nigeria — The Osun State Police Command has arrested several suspected hoodlums and political thugs in Osogbo as part of a renewed crackdown on criminal activities and efforts to maintain law and order across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed the arrests during a press conference held on Tuesday at the State Police Headquarters in Osogbo. He said the operation formed part of recent successes recorded by the command in its sustained campaign against violent crimes, political violence and other security threats.

According to the police commissioner, the suspects were apprehended during intelligence-led operations carried out in different parts of Osogbo following credible information linking them to activities capable of disrupting public peace and security.

Gotan said the command remains committed to ensuring that Osun State remains safe and peaceful, especially as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of future elections. He warned that the police would not tolerate acts of violence, intimidation or any form of criminality capable of undermining public order.

He explained that the command has intensified surveillance, intelligence gathering and routine patrols across the state to identify criminal hideouts, prevent attacks and arrest individuals involved in unlawful activities.

The commissioner noted that the arrests demonstrate the effectiveness of the command's proactive policing strategy and reaffirmed the determination of officers to respond swiftly to security threats wherever they arise.

He also urged politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid sponsoring or associating with thugs, warning that anyone found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted irrespective of political affiliation or social status.

According to the police, investigations into the activities of the suspects are ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement in criminal offences and whether additional arrests may be necessary.

The command called on residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could help prevent crime and facilitate the arrest of criminal elements operating within their communities.

Gotan assured the public that the police would continue working closely with other security agencies and community stakeholders to strengthen security across Osun State. He added that the command remains fully prepared to respond to any threat to public peace and would continue to enforce the law without fear or favour.

The latest arrests underscore the police command's ongoing efforts to curb political violence, dismantle criminal networks and maintain a secure environment for residents and businesses throughout Osun State.
