The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution formally exonerating its former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, of embezzlement allegations that formed part of the grounds for his impeachment in January 2024. The resolution, adopted on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, also commuted Oluomo's impeachment to a resignation, effectively clearing his name more than two years after his removal from office.
The decision followed the presentation of a report by the Committee of the Whole House, submitted by Deputy Speaker Lateefat Bolanle Ajayi. The report stemmed from a motion Oluomo had filed before the Assembly on March 31, 2026, seeking either a formal exoneration from the embezzlement accusation or, in the alternative, the provision of concrete evidence to support the claim, in line with Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution.
According to the committee's findings, the House observed that the allegation of embezzlement was not included in the notice of removal served on Oluomo at the time of his impeachment and therefore could not be established against him. "Having reviewed the evidence provided, this honourable House consequently withdraws the allegation of embezzlement as part of the reasons for his removal from office," the report stated. The Assembly further resolved, "in the spirit of camaraderie, oneness and unity, this honourable House resolves and overturns the said removal of Rt. Hon. Oluomo, Olakunle Taiwo from office and commutes the same into a resignation".
Oluomo was impeached on January 23, 2024, by 18 out of 26 members of the Assembly during a sitting presided over by the Deputy Speaker. At the time, he was attending the swearing-in of customary court judges at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta. The impeachment was based on allegations of gross misconduct, highhandedness, lack of focus and transparency, financial misappropriation, and the pursuit of selfish interests.
Reacting to the Assembly's decision, Oluomo thanked his colleagues for pursuing the path of peace and protecting the integrity of the House, stating that "only men of honour made mistakes, discover it and make corrections". He described the decision as being in the best interest of democratic ethics and the protection of the dignity of the House. The resolution marks a significant reversal in the political fortunes of the former Speaker, who had previously challenged his impeachment in court, dismissing it as illegal. With the Assembly's decision to commute his removal to a resignation, Oluomo's political record is effectively cleared of the embezzlement allegation that had clouded his departure from office.
