A Nigerian delegation led by Major General T. E. Gagariga has visited the Nigerian Contingent serving under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), charging officers and soldiers to remain disciplined, professional and committed to their responsibilities as representatives of Nigeria on an international peacekeeping assignment.
The visit took place on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Nigerian Contingent’s base at Yundum Barracks, The Gambia, as part of the delegation’s activities during its participation in the 19th African Security Watch Conference held in the country. The delegation decided to meet with Nigerian troops before returning home, describing the engagement as an important opportunity to encourage personnel and assess their operational commitment.
Addressing the troops during the visit, Major General Gagariga commended the contingent for its dedication, resilience and service, acknowledging their role in supporting regional peace and stability through the ECOWAS mission.
He reminded the officers and soldiers that their responsibilities extend beyond military duties, noting that they serve as ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to him, the conduct, professionalism and interactions of deployed personnel with citizens of the host country contribute significantly to Nigeria’s reputation internationally.
The senior officer urged the troops to maintain the highest standards of discipline, respect the laws and authorities of the host nation, and continue to demonstrate the values expected of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He also emphasised the importance of responsible use of social media, directing personnel to strictly comply with existing military guidelines on online activities. He warned that individual actions, particularly in the digital space, could affect public confidence in the military and Nigeria’s image abroad.
Major General Gagariga further charged officers within the contingent to provide effective leadership and remain accountable in the discharge of their responsibilities. He stressed that commanders must lead by example, as their behaviour and decisions influence the attitude and performance of the soldiers under their command.
He encouraged officers to demonstrate integrity, discipline and professionalism at all times, describing these qualities as essential to maintaining the reputation and effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.
Responding on behalf of the Nigerian Contingent, the Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Y. M. Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to Major General Gagariga and members of the delegation for making time to visit the troops.
He said the visit provided encouragement and valuable professional guidance to personnel serving under ECOMIG, assuring the delegation that the contingent remained committed to fulfilling its mandate while protecting the honour and prestige of Nigeria.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi reaffirmed that Nigerian troops would continue to uphold discipline, professionalism and respect for the ECOWAS mission’s objectives as they contribute to peace and security efforts in The Gambia.
The Nigerian Contingent is part of the ECOWAS regional security arrangement established to support stability and democratic development in The Gambia. Nigeria has historically played a leading role in regional peacekeeping operations, contributing troops and resources to missions aimed at preventing instability and protecting peace in West Africa.
During the visit, the delegation toured the Nigerian Contingent Base Camp at Yundum Barracks, where they were briefed on operational activities, facilities and the general welfare arrangements of personnel.
The engagement concluded with a group photograph involving members of the delegation and officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Contingent.
The visit underscores the continued importance of discipline, professionalism and responsible conduct among Nigerian troops deployed abroad, as the country maintains its role in supporting regional security cooperation and peacekeeping efforts across West Africa.
