The Federal Government has renewed its commitment to eliminating bullying in Nigerian schools by strengthening the implementation of the National Policy on Anti-Bullying and expanding measures aimed at creating safer, more inclusive and supportive learning environments for children across the country.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the renewed effort on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, during a sensitisation workshop organised in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). The initiative is part of ongoing government efforts to improve school safety, protect students’ well-being and promote a culture of respect and inclusion within educational institutions nationwide.
The campaign aligns with the vision of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, to strengthen policies that safeguard learners and ensure that schools remain environments where children can learn without fear of intimidation, harassment or violence.
Speaking during the workshop, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Aisha Garba, who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, Hon. Olajuwon Rasaq Akinyemi, called on students to actively participate in the fight against bullying by reporting incidents and supporting victims.
She emphasised the importance of the campaign message, “If you see something, say something,” encouraging students who experience or witness bullying to speak out and seek assistance from appropriate authorities.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, bullying remains a major concern because of its impact on students’ emotional well-being, academic performance and overall development. The government stressed that creating safe schools requires cooperation among students, teachers, parents, education authorities and other stakeholders.
The ministry stated that continued awareness campaigns and improved enforcement of the National Policy on Anti-Bullying have contributed to a reduction in reported cases of bullying in some schools. It added that more efforts would be directed towards improving reporting channels and ensuring that complaints are properly addressed.
Officials explained that the anti-bullying initiative is designed not only to respond to incidents but also to prevent bullying through education, early intervention and the promotion of positive relationships among students.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its determination to strengthen collaboration among education stakeholders, enhance monitoring mechanisms and ensure that schools across Nigeria adopt effective measures to protect learners.
The ministry said the campaign forms part of broader efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government to improve the quality of education and provide children with learning environments that support safety, equality and personal development.
Education experts have consistently highlighted the importance of addressing bullying in schools, noting that unchecked harassment can affect students’ confidence, mental well-being and willingness to participate in academic and social activities.
Through the strengthened anti-bullying campaign, the government aims to encourage schools to establish stronger prevention strategies, promote open communication and ensure that students understand their rights and responsibilities within the learning environment.
The Federal Ministry of Education said it would continue working with UBEC and other partners to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to a safe, inclusive and learner-friendly school environment where they can pursue education without fear of discrimination or abuse.
