The Bauchi State Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspected cattle rustlers and the recovery of three stolen bulls valued at N1.73 million in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state, in a major breakthrough against livestock theft along the Bauchi-Gombe border. The command's spokesperson confirmed that the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Alkaleri Police Division following credible intelligence. The suspects, identified as 40-year-old Umaru Adamu, also known as Balawo, and 30-year-old Haruna Usman, alias Dotti, both residents of Dawo Village in Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State, were arrested on July 19, 2026.
The police spokesperson stated that during the operation, the suspects were found in possession of three bulls valued at N1,730,000, which are suspected to have been stolen. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects obtained the cattle from two other suspects who are currently at large and believed to be habitual rustlers terrorising communities along the Gombe and Bauchi states axis. The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that efforts be intensified to track down and arrest the fleeing accomplices. The two suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue, while the recovered cattle have been secured as exhibits.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police to aid crime prevention and investigation. Cattle rustling remains a persistent challenge in parts of Bauchi State, where rural communities depend heavily on livestock for their livelihoods. The arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of the stolen bulls represent a significant victory in the command's ongoing efforts to combat cattle theft and other related crimes in the region. The police have assured the public that they will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all residents across the state.
