The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist and recovered four locally fabricated firearms in Jesse, Ethiope West Local Government Area, following a complaint from a resident who alleged he was shot by the suspect. A statement issued on Friday, July 24, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Bright Edafe, said the arrest was sequel to a complaint from a resident who alleged that he was shot by one Oghenebuba Mamatime on July 21, 2026. The police spokesman said operatives of Jesse Division, working alongside community youths, arrested the suspect, identified as Mamatime, 28, who was described as a suspected member of the Eiye Confraternity and a person on the command's wanted list.
Edafe said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly attacked the victim following a disagreement linked to the victim's decision to quit cultism. He said the suspect's attempt to force the victim back into the confraternity led to an argument during which the victim was shot. The police spokesman disclosed that three locally made pistols and one locally made single-barrelled gun were recovered from the suspect at the time of his arrest. He said the suspect remains in police custody as investigation continues.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Mr. Yemi Oyeniyi, applauded the cooperation between police operatives and community youths in tackling cultism and other criminal activities. He urged communities to sustain such collaboration and extend it to combating drug abuse, kidnapping and other serious crimes. The police commissioner also advised youths across the state to avoid cult-related activities and embrace lawful means of pursuing their aspirations.
The arrest is part of the command's sustained efforts to combat cultism and violent crime across Delta State, where cult-related violence remains one of the top crimes. In a related operation, operatives of the Oghara Division intercepted a silver Lexus RX330 SUV during a surveillance patrol on July 12 and arrested four suspected cultists after recovering a locally made cut-to-size gun and one live cartridge. Another suspected cultist was also arrested in the polytechnic area of Ogwashi-Uku following a distress call, with one locally made pistol, three live cartridges, one expended cartridge and a dagger recovered from him. The Commissioner of Police reiterated the command's commitment to tackling violent crime through intelligence-led policing and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, assuring them that the command would remain relentless in protecting lives and property across the state.
