The Kano State High Court has sentenced a man, Shuaibu Abdulkadir, to death by hanging for the murder of a 23-year-old housewife, Rumasa'u Shuaibu. Justice Farida Rabiu-Danbappa delivered the judgment on Friday, July 24, 2026, holding that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Abdulkadir, a resident of Chediyar Kuda, Shauchi Quarters, Kano, was charged with culpable homicide. According to the prosecution, he committed the offence on April 6, 2025, in Farawa Quarters, Kano. The prosecution counsel, Basiru Kabiru-Ali, told the court that Abdulkadir killed the victim, who was his girlfriend's friend. The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered seven exhibits, including the confessional statement, a photograph, and the mobile phone of the deceased, to prove its case.
In her judgment, Justice Rabiu-Danbappa found Abdulkadir guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging. "May Allah have mercy on your soul. You have 90 days to appeal," the judge stated. The convict, however, denied committing the offence. His defence counsel, Mustapha Idris, presented him to testify in his own defence and pleaded for leniency, describing him as a first-time offender who had expressed remorse for his actions. The prosecution stated that the offence contravenes Section 221 of the Penal Code.
The case has drawn attention to the ongoing debate over the enforcement of capital punishment in Nigeria. Recently, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, called on Governor Abba Yusuf to approve the execution of convicted murderers, arguing that enforcing the death penalty would serve as a strong deterrent against violent crimes. The monarch made the appeal following the gruesome killing of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children, an incident that has shocked residents of the state.
Abdulkadir now has 90 days to appeal the sentence. The case adds to the list of death sentences handed down by Kano courts in recent months, as the judiciary continues to clamp down on violent crimes in the state.
