The Yoruba Tennis Club, one of Nigeria's oldest and most prestigious social and cultural institutions, is set to host the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, as the guest lecturer for the third edition of its centenary seminar and lecture series. The event, scheduled to take place on August 6, 2026, at the Greetings Hall of the club in Onikan, Lagos, will feature Governor Eno speaking on the theme: "Democracy and the Imperative of Good Governance: Renewing Hope in Challenging Times." The lecture is part of a robust programme of activities marking the club's 100th anniversary and is expected to draw a distinguished audience of academics, business leaders, policymakers, and members of the public.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour, underscoring the significance of the event and the importance of cross-state collaboration in fostering intellectual and policy discourse. In a statement, the General Secretary of the club, Lookman Kotun, noted that the seminar series was conceived as a platform for ideas and reflection, interrogating the past, engaging the present, and illuminating pathways to the future. According to Kotun, the lecture will provide members and invited guests with a unique opportunity to engage Governor Eno in discussions on democratic governance, leadership, and the development strides recorded in Akwa Ibom State under his administration.
Governor Eno, an accomplished businessman, clergy, and management expert whose career spans the banking, private, and public sectors, has been widely recognised for his leadership style, commitment to human capital development, and passion for excellence. His administration has prioritised human capacity development, collaboration with public and private institutions, and initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for the people of Akwa Ibom State. The lecture is expected to offer insights into his governance philosophy and the practical steps his administration has taken to navigate the complex socio-economic challenges facing the state and the nation.
The Yoruba Tennis Club, which has remained one of Nigeria's foremost social and cultural institutions, has a long-standing tradition of promoting dialogue, fellowship, and leadership. Its centenary celebration, themed "A Century at the Forefront of History and Tradition," emphasises the club's commitment to preserving its heritage while contributing to Nigeria's cultural and intellectual development. The club has previously hosted a series of high-profile lectures as part of its anniversary, featuring eminent speakers such as Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. The upcoming lecture with Governor Eno is expected to be another landmark event in the club's storied history, bringing together members of the academia, the organised private sector, public officials, and sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom State to reflect on the critical issues of democracy and governance in Nigeria.
