A physically challenged beggar was crushed to death on Saturday morning in a multiple-vehicle crash caused by a suspected brake failure on the outbound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The fatal incident occurred at Car Park C, a known congestion point along the busy highway, and involved a container-laden Mack truck, a loaded DAF truck, and a white Toyota bus, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency. The victim, who was in a wheelchair, was reportedly begging for alms along the roadside when the out-of-control truck veered off its path and struck him, slicing his body instantly.
The Head of Media for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued on Saturday, July 25, 2026, noting that the collision happened in the early hours of the day. He identified the vehicles involved as the MACK truck with registration number AGL 374 XX, a DAF truck marked AKM 476 XB, and a white Toyota bus bearing registration number AKD 137 YA. According to eyewitness accounts, the MACK truck suffered a total brake failure while approaching a turning point, leading to a chain reaction of collisions as it rammed into the vehicles attempting to navigate the bend. The loss of braking power also resulted in the truck fatally striking the physically challenged beggar, who was unable to move out of the way.
The crash caused a severe disruption of traffic on the outbound Lagos route, with TRACE operatives, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police mobilising to the scene to manage the gridlock and restore normal flow. As of the time of filing the report, efforts to remove the accident vehicles and clear the debris were still ongoing. The incident comes barely 24 hours after a separate series of fatal crashes on the Kara Bridge section of the same expressway claimed the life of a motor boy and caused a massive traffic gridlock that stranded hundreds of commuters. In that earlier incident, an overturned articulated trailer carrying chemical substances blocked the roadway, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving multiple vehicles and leaving thousands of motorists trapped for hours.
