Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have intensified efforts to rescue the abducted Executive Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Honourable Nura Umar Abdullahi, after armed terrorists stormed his residence in the early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, overpowering his security detail and whisking him away in a brazen attack that claimed the lives of four security personnel. According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the terrorists invaded the chairman's residence in Bungudu town, a strategic location along the Gusau–Sokoto highway, and engaged his police and vigilante guards in a fierce gun battle before abducting him and several members of his family.
The military said troops responded immediately after hearing gunshots from the area and swiftly moved to the scene, where they engaged the fleeing attackers in a hot pursuit that led to a fierce exchange of fire. The prompt intervention forced the terrorists to abandon five members of the chairman's family, comprising two of his children, his mother, his wife, and a relative, all of whom were successfully rescued unharmed. However, the attackers narrowly escaped into the surrounding bushes with the council chairman, leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. The attack claimed the lives of two police officers and two local vigilantes who gallantly resisted the attackers, while a civilian was also killed during the operation. The chairman's elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, a former Treasury Officer with the Zamfara State Ministry of Finance, sustained injuries during the attack.
Following the incident, the Theatre Command activated a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and local vigilantes. Security forces are currently conducting deliberate operations at suspected locations where the terrorists are believed to be hiding, with all available operational resources deployed to secure the chairman's safe release. The Theatre Command assured the Zamfara State Government and residents that every lawful and operational measure is being taken to achieve a successful outcome, while also urging members of the public to remain calm, continue with their lawful activities, and provide credible information through established security channels that could assist the ongoing rescue mission.
The abduction of the Bungudu council chairman is the latest in a series of attacks on local government officials in Zamfara State, where bandits have increasingly targeted political leaders and security personnel in their campaign of terror. The attack occurred in a town located just a short drive from the state capital, Gusau, raising urgent questions about how heavily armed gunmen could operate for an extended period without being intercepted. Residents have attributed the recurring attacks to the sophisticated weapons allegedly used by the bandits and the activities of informants suspected of providing intelligence to criminal groups. The persistence of such attacks has raised serious concerns about the government's ability to protect its citizens and secure its officials, as communities across Zamfara State continue to bear the brunt of a crisis that has shown no signs of abating.
As troops intensify their search for the abducted chairman, the Theatre Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that it would continue working with other security agencies until the chairman is safely reunited with his family and those responsible for the attack are brought to justice. The military has also appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the ongoing rescue operation. For the people of Bungudu and the wider Zamfara State, the question remains: how many more officials and citizens must be abducted or killed before the government takes decisive action to end the cycle of violence that has turned the North-West into a theatre of terror? The attack on the chairman's residence is a stark reminder that insecurity is reaching even the highest levels of local government, leaving ordinary Nigerians to wonder where they can truly feel safe.
