Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that lasting marriages are sustained not by wealth, beauty, or social status, but by character, forgiveness, patience, and humility—qualities that enable couples to withstand life's inevitable challenges even when affection fades and fortunes change. Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the wedding reception of Aishatu Yusuf Buratai, daughter of former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (retd.), and her husband Umar Abba Zoru, at the Tukur and Tukur Farm along the Abuja-Keffi Road in Nasarawa State on Saturday, July 25, 2026, Shettima described the family as humanity's oldest and most enduring institution, stressing that nations survive because families endure, and civilisations flourish through homes that raise principled men and women.
Shettima warned that society has increasingly prioritised visibility above virtue, teaching young people how to pursue success without training them to sustain meaningful relationships. He argued that marriage serves as a rebellion against that emptiness, teaching restraint in times of excess, loyalty amid fleeting attachments, and above all, responsibility—which he described as the price every meaningful love demands. "Our faith describes marriage as half of religion, and I have always understood why. It is at home that patience, honesty and mercy are tested daily, far from the applause of strangers," Shettima said.
Addressing the newlywed couple directly, the Vice President urged them to build their union on forgiveness, friendship, patience and the humility to continually choose one another despite life's uncertainties. He noted that while affection may fade and fortunes may change, character remains the enduring foundation that sustains marriages through difficult times. "Affection alone cannot sustain a home. Beauty will change and fortunes may rise and fall. But character is what keeps two people standing beside each other when life tests their convictions," Shettima declared.
He also commended the Buratai and Zoru families for promoting unity, respect, and service to the nation, while emphasising that a family's true worth lies not in prominence or influence, but in the values it quietly transmits from one generation to the next—values that no lawyer can draft into a will and no hardship can erase. The colourful wedding reception, which featured prayers, goodwill messages, cultural and durbar displays, and musical performances, was attended by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Arc. Ibrahim Bunu; the Emir of Lafia; the Emir of Keffi; the Emir of Biu; the Andoma of Doma; and other distinguished guests, including family members, friends, well-wishers, traditional rulers, senior military officers, and top government officials.
