The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted a consignment of tramadol pills cleverly concealed inside black soap containers in an attempt to smuggle the illicit drugs to the United Kingdom, marking the latest success in the agency's ongoing efforts to disrupt international drug trafficking networks operating through Nigeria's borders. The seizure was made during a routine interdiction operation by NDLEA operatives in Lagos, where officers uncovered the hidden drugs before they could be transported out of the country, according to a statement issued by the agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on his official X account on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Announcing the operation, Babafemi explained that traffickers had attempted to disguise the tramadol pills by burying them inside black soap containers, hoping the concealment would evade security checks before the package reached the UK. He shared images and video of the intercepted consignment, showing pills of tramadol buried in containers of black soap, adding, "Here are pills of tramadol buried in black soap containers to get them to the UK, but the concealment was discovered by NDLEA officers in Lagos." Reacting to the seizure, the NDLEA spokesperson reiterated the agency's warning to members of the public against accepting parcels or luggage from other people without knowing their contents, stressing that unsuspecting individuals could unknowingly become entangled in criminal activities. "It's difficult not to continue to warn people that they should avoid accepting any parcel or luggage from anyone," Babafemi wrote. "Our advice has not changed. Never agree to transport or receive any parcel whose contents you cannot personally confirm. Criminal syndicates often rely on unsuspecting couriers to move illegal substances," he added.
