A devastating road accident at the Imo State University junction in Owerri has claimed multiple lives after a high-speed truck, reportedly suffering brake failure, rammed into commercial minibuses and pedestrians. The incident, which occurred on the evening of July 26, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the community, with disturbing videos circulating online showing the grim aftermath.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavy-duty truck was travelling at excessive speed and driving against traffic when it lost control. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into several stationary mini-buses loaded with passengers at the busy IMSU junction. A witness recounted, “The trailer was carrying stones and was driving at a high speed when it failed to stop at the IMSU junction”. The impact was catastrophic, with the truck crushing multiple vehicles. “I am very sure that 15 people died at the spot, while several others who sustained various degrees of injuries were rushed to the hospital,” another witness reported.
The tragedy highlights the persistent dangers at the IMSU junction, which has been a recurring site of fatal accidents. Videos shared on social media captured the chaotic scene, showing victims being transported to hospitals and the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital Owerri (FUTHO). However, eyewitnesses criticized the delayed response from security and emergency services. One witness lamented, “I was surprised that for more than one hour after the accident, the police that always mount roadblocks… never showed up to help out”.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the driver of the truck has been arrested. Authorities have urged the government to implement stricter road safety measures and ban heavy-duty vehicles from plying the state capital during the day.
