Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has ordered troops to intensify ongoing counter-terrorism operations across Nigeria's North-West region following a series of deadly attacks in Zamfara State, directing military commanders to adopt "surgical operations without mercy" to eliminate terrorist networks. The directive, issued on Sunday, July 26, 2026, through a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmed Dan-Wudil, came as the minister condoled with victims of recent attacks in Bungudu Local Government Area and other affected communities.
Matawalle instructed Operation FANSAN YAMMA and all military formations conducting counter-terrorism operations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto and Kaduna states to intensify their operations by employing every lawful and necessary measure to eliminate terrorist activities through precise, intelligence-driven operations. The minister directed the leadership of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to remain steadfast and relentless in the fight against terrorism in collaboration with other security agencies operating in the affected areas.
Senior military commanders overseeing the most volatile operational areas were specifically tasked with strengthening surveillance and increasing patrols aimed at identifying and destroying terrorist hideouts, camps and safe havens before they could be used to launch further attacks. The minister's directive came amid a recent wave of attacks in Zamfara State, including the abduction of the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area, Hon. Nura Umar, and the killing of 26 farmers in Talata Mafara LGA.
Appealing to the public, particularly traditional rulers and community leaders, Matawalle urged them to support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence on individuals collaborating with terrorists or supplying information used to carry out attacks on rural communities. The minister commended the gallantry, professionalism and sacrifices of the Armed Forces and other security personnel, praising recent successes in neutralising several terrorists in Gummi, Bukkuyum, Anka, Tsafe, Faskari and other locations. He urged troops to sustain the momentum and maintain decisive pressure on terrorist groups until peace and security are fully restored across affected parts of the country.
