The Nigerian Army has arrested Private Mohammad Yusuf, a soldier who was declared wanted over his alleged involvement in the illegal supply of military uniforms, accoutrements and other sensitive materials to terrorist groups operating in the North-East. Yusuf, who was attached to the Nigerian Army Ordnance Kits Factory in Lagos, was apprehended at about 6:30 p.m. on July 25, 2026, at Jidari Bus Stop in Maiduguri, Borno State, by troops of the 7 Provost Group, according to a statement issued on Sunday by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI.
The soldier had been declared wanted on July 23, 2026, by the Headquarters Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps following preliminary investigations that established his alleged involvement in the illegal sale of military accoutrements to terrorists and other criminal elements. The Army had announced that Yusuf absconded from his unit on June 3, 2026, prompting intensive efforts to locate and apprehend him to face a full investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with extant military laws. The Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps had stated unequivocally that it has zero tolerance for misconduct, indiscipline, or any act capable of compromising the operational effectiveness, integrity and reputation of the Nigerian Army or threatening national security.
The arrest of Yusuf comes amid growing concerns over the infiltration of military ranks by collaborators and informants who supply critical resources to terrorist groups. The theft and sale of military uniforms to criminal elements have long been identified as a significant security threat, as insurgents can use the uniforms to impersonate soldiers, infiltrate communities and military installations, and carry out attacks with greater impunity.
