The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a firm reminder to American citizens with dual nationality, including those who also hold Nigerian citizenship, that they are required by law to use a valid United States passport when entering or departing the United States. In a travel advisory shared on its official X account on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the embassy clarified that this mandate applies equally to all U.S. citizens, including children, regardless of whether they hold citizenship of another country. The advisory serves as a critical warning for the growing number of Nigerians who have acquired U.S. citizenship and frequently travel between both nations.
The embassy specifically cautioned that dual-national U.S. citizens are strictly prohibited from using their foreign passports to apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to the advisory, routinely denies or cancels ESTA applications submitted by dual U.S. citizens using foreign passports. The embassy reiterated that the requirement is non-negotiable for all American citizens. "U.S. citizens are REQUIRED to enter and depart the United States on a U.S. passport. This requirement applies equally to U.S. citizens, including children, who are dual nationals," the embassy stated. "Dual national U.S. citizens may NOT use their foreign passport to apply for an electronic travel authorization (ESTA). The Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels ESTAs for dual national U.S. citizens."
The advisory further urged U.S. citizens residing abroad, including those living in Nigeria, to ensure their passports are valid before making any travel plans to the United States. The embassy advised travellers to renew passports that have expired or are approaching expiration, and reminded them that many countries require passports to have at least six months of validity before entry. The reminder is part of the embassy's ongoing efforts to prevent travel disruptions and ensure that American citizens comply with federal immigration laws. The advisory has particular significance for the large Nigerian diaspora community, many of whom hold dual citizenship and frequently travel between Nigeria and the United States for business, family, and other purposes. The embassy's clarification aims to prevent travel disruptions and legal complications that could arise from non-compliance with the entry and exit requirements.
