Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly denied allegations that he made divisive remarks about northern Nigerians, describing the claims as entirely false and politically motivated . In an interview on Channels Television's Sunday Politics aired July 26, 2026, Obi dismissed the accusations with a direct response: "That's a lie. It never happened" .
The former Anambra State governor also rejected suggestions that his presidency would divide the country, insisting that his record of humanitarian work, interfaith engagement, and long-standing ties with northern communities demonstrate his commitment to national unity . "I will unite Nigeria, and I know what it takes to unite Nigeria," Obi declared, responding to criticisms by former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff .
To support his position, Obi detailed his extensive humanitarian interventions across northern Nigeria. He recalled travelling to Borno State during the early Boko Haram insurgency to console Sheriff after the killing of his brother . "When people didn't want to go there, I went to Borno State," Obi said . He also visited Borno following severe flooding, where he donated N50 million, met with the state governor and the Shehu of Borno, and visited internally displaced persons camps . According to Obi, his humanitarian activities have taken him to several northern states, including Katsina, Kebbi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Sokoto . "I've been to the most troubled parts of the North… I've been to Benue up to four times, visiting the various affected communities… I've spent Christmas and New Year in IDP camps," he said .
Obi further argued that his personal and professional relationships demonstrate his commitment to inclusivity. He noted that his Aide-de-Camp (ADC) as Anambra governor was a Muslim from Kano, his cooks were northerners, and his administration sponsored Muslim faithful in the state on annual Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia . "As governor, I was paying for Muslims living in Anambra to go to Hajj," he said . He also disclosed that he currently supports Almajiri schools in Kano and Bauchi, as well as a School of Nursing in Bauchi, describing these initiatives as part of his commitment to education and development across Nigeria .
Obi urged Nigerians to focus political discourse on poverty, insecurity, education and healthcare rather than personality-driven debates . He argued that national issues deserve greater attention than what he called politically motivated accusations aimed at creating ethnic and regional divisions . The NDC presidential candidate reaffirmed his vision for the country, stating, "I will never divide Nigeria. I will unite Nigeria. I will show love to every part of Nigeria and make sure things are done differently, because I'm going to involve everybody" .
