A three-storey building housing students collapsed on Monday, July 27, 2026, in the Ifite community, near Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in Anambra State. The incident occurred in the early hours, with many occupants feared trapped in the rubble. Rescue operations are currently ongoing, with emergency responders working to locate and extract survivors.
The building, a popular student lodge in the area, was reportedly filled with occupants at the time of the collapse. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and the ongoing rescue efforts. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Nigeria, often attributed to poor construction standards, the use of substandard materials, and disregard for building regulations. The collapsed building is located at 68 University Road in Ifite, Awka, a densely populated area popular with students due to its proximity to the university campus. Photos shared from the scene show heaps of debris and rescue officials attempting to reach those trapped.
The Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has deployed personnel and equipment to assist in the rescue operation. There is no official statement yet from the state government regarding the incident. Building collapses remain a significant challenge in Nigeria, with many incidents reported across the country, frequently resulting in the loss of lives and property. The Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) has repeatedly warned about the dangers posed by substandard construction practices and the use of inferior building materials. The National Building Code and other relevant regulations are still not being enforced, leading to preventable deaths and injuries.
