Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has launched a blistering critique of Nigeria's political elite, accusing President Bola Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, and Works Minister David Umahi of sending their children to foreign universities while asking ordinary Nigerians to celebrate the student loan scheme. In a post on his X handle on Monday, July 27, 2026, Sowore argued that the same leaders who have served as governors, ministers and senators never built or strengthened a single public university they were proud enough to send their own children to . “Their children attended some of the best universities abroad, while public universities at home were neglected,” he said .
Sowore’s remarks were aimed at what he described as a fundamental hypocrisy in Nigeria’s approach to education. While the Federal Government has expanded the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to over 1.1 million beneficiaries with N206.2 billion disbursed, he argued that those championing the scheme have never had to rely on it for their own children’s education . “Ask yourself: did Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, Charles Soludo, David Umahi, and others take out student loans to send their children to universities in the United Kingdom? The answer is no,” he wrote, adding that the public resources that should have transformed education for millions were instead used to finance the lifestyles of a political elite .
