The National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has issued a passionate call to Nigerian students, urging them to actively participate in politics and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 general elections . In a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, July 27, 2026, Afeez stressed that government policies directly affect students' education, welfare and future, and that any attempt to deceive students into believing they should not be involved in politics is misleading .

The NANS President argued that politics is not just about politicians but about the decisions that shape daily lives, including tuition policies, student loans, scholarships, infrastructure, security, and employment opportunities . "That is why students must not remain mere spectators—we must be active participants in shaping the future of our nation," he said . Afeez called on every Nigerian student aged 18 and above to register and obtain a valid Permanent Voter's Card, describing voting as a vital civic responsibility . "Your vote is your voice, and your voice is your power," he declared .

He urged students to reject political apathy and take advantage of the democratic process to influence the country's future . "Let us rise above apathy, participate in the democratic process, and vote for the future we desire. The future of Nigeria belongs to us, and we must play our part in building it," Afeez stated .

The call comes amid ongoing efforts by NANS to mobilise students nationwide to obtain their PVCs, with the association having previously declared a state of emergency on students' hostels and vowing tougher oversight of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund . Afeez had earlier disclosed that NANS structures across the country had begun mobilisation efforts to ensure students obtained their PVCs ahead of the 2027 elections . However, his call has not been without controversy, as a group of concerned Nigerian students recently announced a vote of no confidence in the NANS President, accusing him of compromising the neutrality of the association through partisan political engagements . The group argued that the office of the NANS President is a national institution established to represent the collective interests of Nigerian students, not a platform for promoting or defending the interests of politicians or political parties .

Despite the criticism, Afeez has remained firm in his advocacy, maintaining that students must play an active role in determining Nigeria's political future . His administration has also been actively engaged in addressing other student welfare issues, including the clearance of NELFUND upkeep payment backlogs and the declaration of a state of emergency on students' hostels . As the 2027 elections approach, the NANS President's call for student participation is expected to intensify, as the association positions itself as a key player in shaping the electoral outcome and ensuring that the voices of Nigerian students are heard at the ballot box .
