Cape Verde defender Sidny Lopes Cabral has been named the winner of the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his spectacular extra-time strike against Argentina in the Round of 32 topping the public vote. FIFA announced the award on Monday, July 27, 2026, with Cabral's curling effort beating 307 other goals scored across the tournament to claim the prestigious honour. The 23-year-old left-back becomes the first player from an African nation to win the award since it was introduced in 2006, succeeding a prestigious list that includes Maxi Rodriguez, Diego Forlan, James Rodriguez, Benjamin Pavard and Richarlison.
The goal that captured the world's imagination came on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Miami Stadium in Florida, during Cape Verde's remarkable debut World Cup campaign. With the tournament debutants trailing 2-1 to the defending champions in extra time of their last-32 encounter, Cabral received the ball on the left side of the Argentina penalty area. In the 103rd minute, he cut inside past Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and curled a perfectly placed right-footed shot into the top right corner, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The strike drew Cape Verde level at 2-2 in what had already been a thrilling contest, though Argentina ultimately progressed with a 3-2 victory after a deflected header from Cristian Romero and an own goal from Cape Verde midfielder Diney Borges.
Reflecting on the unforgettable moment, Cabral described the experience as surreal. "The moment I dribbled past my opponent, I saw an opening and thought, 'Let's have a go'," he told FIFA. "I shoot well with both feet. I saw the space and was eyeing the top corner. I aimed there and struck the ball really well. When I looked up and saw it heading for that top corner, I thought, 'What the hell did I just do?' I couldn't believe it." He added: "Everybody dreams of just scoring in the World Cup, but to score in this way, at such a big stage against such a big team, was amazing. I was really happy."
The goal sparked emotional celebrations both on the pitch and in the stands, where Cabral's mother, Teresa, fainted after witnessing her son's moment of brilliance. "Before the game, I'd told my mom and my girlfriend that if I scored, I'd run over to them," Cabral recalled. "When I got there, I saw my mom crying; she hadn't even realised I was right there. Everyone was busy tending to her because she had fainted when I scored!" The 23-year-old also revealed that he received a congratulatory message from Brazilian legend Marcelo, one of his football idols, who told Cabral that he had voted for his goal as the best of the tournament. "He's one of my biggest idols. He told me he voted for my goal as the best of the tournament! I replied, 'Thank you so much! I don't know how to thank you'," Cabral said.
Cabral's goal was voted best of the 308 goals scored at the tournament, finishing ahead of Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov's delicate lob against DR Congo and Haiti's Wilson Isidor, who scored with a powerful rising shot against Morocco. FIFA had drawn up a shortlist of 12 goals for public voting, which closed on Monday, July 27, with Cabral's strike emerging as the clear winner. The Cape Verde international had earlier won the Round of 32 phase of voting for the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament award, with his strike topping the polls in that stage as well.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to parents from Cape Verde, Cabral's journey to World Cup stardom has been anything but conventional. He spent time in the academies of Dutch sides Feyenoord and Twente, as well as Swedish club Helsingborg, before signing for Rot-Weiss Erfurt in the German fifth division in 2022. His rapid rise saw him make his Cape Verde debut the following year and sign for Portuguese top-flight club Estrela da Amadora in 2025. He joined Benfica in January 2026, where he made 12 appearances, before moving to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor in a €10 million deal prior to the World Cup. Just three years ago, he was playing in Germany's fifth division while living in modest conditions.
Cape Verde's World Cup campaign, their first appearance at the global tournament, captured hearts around the world. The island nation went unbeaten in regulation time throughout the competition, drawing all three of their Group H matches against eventual champions Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to advance in second place. In their defeat to Argentina, Cape Verde became the first African nation to ever score multiple goals in a single World Cup match against the defending champions. Cabral had spoken before the match of his excitement at facing Argentina captain Lionel Messi, saying: "I hope I get some pictures standing next to Messi." Instead, he earned something far greater: a place in World Cup history and one of the sport's most coveted individual honours, cementing his name alongside the greatest goal-scorers the tournament has ever seen.
