Gunmen suspected to be bandits have launched a fresh attack on Kaura Namoda town in Zamfara State, targeting the residences of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Kaura Namoda, Dr. Aminu Yusuf Kaura, and a local figure, Sanusi Basa Na-Kazalle. The attack, which occurred on the night of Monday, July 27, 2026, resulted in the tragic killing of one of the Rector's security guards and the abduction of at least two residents.
According to local sources, the assailants stormed the residence of the Rector at Tsohuwar Tasha, where they fatally shot a guard identified as Mal. Isah. The bandits also targeted the home of Sanusi Basa Na-Kazalle, though they were unable to abduct anyone from his residence. However, sources confirmed that the attackers successfully kidnapped two residents from the area before fleeing the scene. While the exact identities of the abducted individuals have not been officially released, reports indicated that the wife and daughter of Mal. Ibrahim Datti, a staff member of the polytechnic's Department of Hospitality Management, were among those taken. Fortunately, the attackers were reportedly unable to abduct anyone from the Rector's immediate family.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the academic and local communities, coming just weeks after the recent rescue of polytechnic students who had been abducted in June. In a statement of sympathy, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity in the area. The union called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted family members.
Kaura Namoda Local Government Area has become a recurring flashpoint for bandit attacks. Just a day before this incident, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA had successfully rescued 48 kidnapped victims following an attack on Magami village in the same local government area. The recurring violence has left residents living in constant fear, with armed groups continuing to operate with impunity despite ongoing military operations in the region.
The latest tragedy underscores the persistent security challenges facing communities across Nigeria's North-West. Bandits have continued to carry out raids, kidnappings, and deadly assaults on rural populations, terrorising residents and disrupting lives. As the search for the abducted victims continues and the community mourns the loss of the slain guard, the attack raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the need for decisive action to halt the recurring bloodshed. The Zamfara State Government and security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
