A farmer, Mr. Aro, popularly known as “Erokun,” has been abducted by armed bandits from his farm in Mopa-Amuro, Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, in the latest incident of rural banditry plaguing Nigeria's North-Central region. The abduction occurred on Saturday, July 25, 2026, according to a family source, who disclosed that the kidnappers have already made contact with the victim's son and demanded a ransom for his release.
The exact location and time of the attack are still being confirmed, but sources indicate that Mr. Aro was working on his farm when the assailants struck. The family is now in a state of distress, appealing for urgent intervention from security agencies and members of the public to secure the safe return of their loved one. Residents and individuals with credible information that could assist security agencies in locating and rescuing Mr. Aro are urged to report to the appropriate authorities.
The abduction of farmers and other rural dwellers has become a persistent security challenge in Kogi State, particularly in local government areas like Mopamuro, which have witnessed a surge in kidnapping and banditry in recent months. In February 2026, bandits carried out a mass abduction of residents near the Government Technical College in Mopa-Muro LGA, while attacks on communities have continued to fuel fear and disrupt agricultural activities. The rising insecurity has also led to the imposition of measures such as the ban on the sale of fuel in jerrycans to cut off logistics supply to criminal elements.
Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has reaffirmed his administration's zero-tolerance approach to negotiating with or paying ransom to criminals. However, the latest abduction underscores the urgent need for a more robust and coordinated security response to protect farmers and rural communities from the scourge of banditry and kidnapping. As the search for Mr. Aro continues, his family and the entire community are praying for his safe return, while security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and rescue the victim.
Further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.
