Kebbi Mourns as Former Deputy Governor Ibrahim Aliyu Dies in Sokoto After Long Illness

The former Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu, has passed away after a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed on Friday, July 31, 2026. Aliyu, who served as deputy governor under former Governor Saidu Usman Dakingari from 2007 to 2015, reportedly died in a hospital in Sokoto, according to multiple news reports. He was 68 years old.

Aliyu hailed from Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State. He was widely respected for his distinguished career in the civil service before venturing into politics. His tenure as deputy governor was marked by humility, integrity, and a commitment to public service, earning him admiration across the state. Reacting to the development, Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former deputy governor, describing it as a painful loss to the Yauri Emirate, Kebbi State, and the nation as a whole. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, Governor Idris said the late Ibrahim Aliyu was one of the state's most respected leaders, whose life was marked by selfless service, integrity, and dedication to public good.

The governor noted that Aliyu distinguished himself both as a career civil servant and as deputy governor, earning widespread respect for his humility, honesty, and commitment to the development of Kebbi State. According to him, the deceased left behind a legacy of exemplary leadership and public service that would continue to inspire future generations. "His invaluable contributions to the development of our state and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of our people will continue to inspire generations," the governor said in the statement.

Governor Idris prayed for Allah's forgiveness for the deceased and asked that he be granted Aljannatul Firdaus. He also extended his condolences to the bereaved family, the Yauri Emirate, and the people of Kebbi State, praying for the strength to bear the loss. The governor described the passing of Alhaji Ibrahim K. Aliyu as a moment of great sadness and an irreparable loss, stressing that Kebbi State has lost a respected elder statesman, a man of wisdom, honour, and uncommon humility.

The late Aliyu is survived by family members who are yet to announce burial arrangements as of the time of this report. His death has drawn tributes from across the state, with many remembering him as a pious, humble, and patriotic leader who served Kebbi State diligently throughout his career.
