The Irigwe Youth Movement has confirmed the killing of a 60-year-old man, Bulus Turu, who was allegedly macheted to death by suspected Fulani herders in Miango District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State. The attack occurred on Thursday, July 30, 2026, while the victim was returning from his farm to Ancha community. The National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Youth Movement, Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday, July 31, 2026.
According to Yonkpa, Bulus Turu was attacked and macheted by suspected Fulani herders or militia. His remains were recovered on Friday morning. The statement noted that the victim was originally from Rotsu village in the same Miango District but had been displaced to Ancha village due to persistent and aggressive attacks on the Irigwe people. He is survived by his two wives, eleven children, and other relatives. "This recent attack is part of the continuous onslaught against the Irigwe people by Fulani militias and their cohorts, aimed at causing unrest, displacement, and the annihilation of our people," Yonkpa said. "May his soul rest in peace, even as we continue to demand justice and stability in our community."
The killing of Bulus Turu is the latest in a series of attacks that have plagued the Irigwe Chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area. In June 2026, an 82-year-old man and a 19-year-old were killed in separate attacks within the same chiefdom. On July 11, 2026, gunmen invaded Te'egbe village in Miango District, killing no fewer than 10 people, including children and the aged.
In a separate attack on the same Thursday night, gunmen invaded Fubok village in Daffo District of Bokkos Local Government Area, injuring a pastor and two other persons. Residents said the attackers struck late in the evening after allegedly attacking a nearby community where three persons were reportedly killed. The pastor, identified as Pastor Philibus, was among those injured, while two members of his church sustained critical injuries and were receiving medical treatment. Residents of the affected communities in both Bassa and Bokkos local government areas expressed grief and frustration over the recurring attacks, saying the continued violence has left many families displaced and living in fear.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The attacks have renewed calls for security agencies to intensify patrols and apprehend the perpetrators. The Irigwe Youth Movement and other community organisations have consistently demanded justice and stability, warning that the relentless killings of their people cannot be allowed to continue.
