The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old woman, Sadiat Yunusa, for the alleged murder of a three-year-old girl, Ummaiyat Y., in Kaiama Local Government Area, in a case that police say was driven by jealousy and resentment arising from a prolonged domestic dispute. The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, disclosed the arrest on Friday, July 31, 2026, in Ilorin, while highlighting the command's recent operational successes in tackling violent crimes across the state. According to the police commissioner, detectives commenced an investigation into the case on July 25, 2026, after a report was lodged at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters that the child had been killed under suspicious circumstances.
Preliminary police findings revealed that the victim had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to the Kaiama Central Market. During that period, Yunusa allegedly lured the child to a nearby farm settlement, where she unlawfully caused her death by strangulation. The police commissioner stated that prompt investigative efforts led to the suspect's arrest, and that she voluntarily confessed to the crime during interrogation. "She disclosed that the act was motivated by resentment and jealousy arising from a prolonged domestic dispute, alleging that her husband had neglected her and her three children in favour of his second wife," Adekimi said.
The suspect, who is a housewife in Kaiama, was subsequently charged to court, according to the police commissioner, who assured residents that the command would continue to ensure thorough investigation and prosecution of criminal cases across the state. The case has generated significant concern within the community due to the tender age of the victim and the circumstances surrounding her death. The tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of domestic disputes escalating into fatal violence, particularly when children become the targets of adult conflicts.
In a related development, the police command also announced the arrest of three teenagers—Ali Umaru, 16; Alhaji Modu, 17; and Abacha Babagana, 14—on July 20, 2026, for unlawful possession of a large quantity of electronic devices and accessories suspected to have been stolen. The suspects were intercepted along the Oko-Olowo/Alapa axis during a stop-and-search operation and were found in possession of items including nine cartons of mobile phones, power banks, used iPhones, and other electronic accessories. They failed to provide satisfactory proof of ownership or lawful possession, and have since been remanded at a juvenile correctional centre pending further proceedings.
The police commissioner reiterated the command's resolve to tackle violent crimes across Kwara State through intelligence-driven policing and community collaboration, urging residents to promptly report suspicious activities and domestic disputes that could escalate into violence. The case of Sadiat Yunusa serves as a stark reminder of the need for early intervention in domestic conflicts to prevent such tragic outcomes, and the police have assured the public that justice will be pursued for the deceased child.
