The Commissioner of Police for the Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has embarked on a comprehensive statewide operational tour of all 11 Area Commands, engaging traditional rulers, community leaders, vigilante groups, and representatives of various interest groups in a sweeping appraisal of the state's security architecture. The tour, which commenced on Monday, July 27, 2026, is part of sustained efforts to reinforce security, deepen community policing, and strengthen collaboration with critical stakeholders across the state.
During the engagements, CP Olugbenga explained the concept of community policing in the simplest and clearest terms, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility that thrives on trust, partnership, and active collaboration between the Police and members of the public. According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the engagements provided a platform for stakeholders to express their concerns while reviewing existing security strategies aimed at safeguarding lives and property. The tour also featured strategic meetings with commanders of sister security agencies and partner organisations to enhance inter-agency collaboration, improve operational effectiveness, and consolidate existing synergy in tackling crime and other security challenges.
CP Olugbenga also met with local vigilante groups and community-based security volunteers, commending their contributions to grassroots security and reaffirming the command's commitment to a collaborative approach to policing. The Commissioner lauded the stakeholders for their role in fostering unity and cooperation between traditional institutions and law enforcement agencies, reiterating that trust, partnership, and timely intelligence sharing are essential for effective policing. He assured that the command would continue to deepen collaboration with community stakeholders, noting that effective policing cannot be achieved in isolation.
The statewide tour follows similar engagements by CP Olugbenga, including a strategic meeting with the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, held at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, on June 23, 2026, to address emerging security challenges, particularly in border communities and the Oke-Ogun axis. The Speaker had commended the Police Commissioner for the impact he has made since his deployment to Oyo State, describing his leadership as commendable, while calling for enhanced security measures in vulnerable communities.
Earlier in April 2026, CP Olugbenga had led a similar initiative during a meeting with Mogajis, traditional leadership representatives, and members of the Ibadan Peace and Security Initiative, reaffirming the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and enhanced public safety. During that engagement, the contact details of Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders were shared with participants through a "Know Your DPO" segment, a measure expected to enhance communication, improve response time to incidents, and strengthen grassroots policing.
The police chief has consistently urged residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information, describing security issues as a collective responsibility. "If the public does not engage with us, they cannot rely on us," CP Olugbenga had earlier stated, adding that effective policing and the fight against crime, particularly kidnapping, require strong collaboration between the police and the public. The command has also intensified efforts to educate the public on the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and maintaining the highest level of impartiality during elections.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state's security architecture through intelligence-led policing, stakeholder engagement, and improved cooperation among security agencies and local communities. The Commissioner of Police remains committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to sustain peace, enhance public safety, and ensure effective protection of lives and property across the state. As the tour continues, the command has reaffirmed its determination to safeguard lives and property through proactive strategies, strengthened community engagement, and improved intelligence collaboration across Oyo State.
