The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate demolition of an illegal settlement located near Karmajiji in the Kukwaba District of Abuja, describing the area as a dangerous "time bomb" and a suspected hideout for criminals operating within the nation's capital. The directive was issued on Friday, July 31, 2026, following a meeting of the FCT Security Committee, after which Wike personally led a team of security operatives to inspect the settlement.
During the inspection, Wike expressed alarm over the unregulated nature of the settlement, noting that it had become virtually impossible for security agencies to identify or trace the individuals living there. "Look at the area. You don't even know who the occupants are. How do you identify them? How do you know where to locate them? And this is inside the city," he said. Describing the situation as a serious security threat, the minister warned: "This is a time bomb. There’s no way we can allow this. The FCT Administration will not allow criminal hideouts to thrive in Abuja".
According to intelligence reports, suspected criminals often retreat to the settlement after carrying out attacks in different parts of the FCT. The minister directed the FCT Department of Development Control to immediately commence the demolition of the illegal structures, working in collaboration with the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, and other security agencies. He warned that anyone found using such locations to facilitate criminal activities would face the full weight of the law.
Wike reaffirmed that the demolition forms part of the FCT Administration's broader strategy to dismantle criminal enclaves, curb insecurity, and restore public confidence in the safety of the Federal Capital Territory. He stressed that the administration would continue to identify and remove illegal settlements found to pose security risks while working closely with security agencies to ensure that Abuja remains safe for residents and visitors alike.
The minister's decisive action underscores the FCT Administration's commitment to eliminating criminal hideouts, enhancing public safety, and protecting residents across the territory. As the demolition exercise gets underway, the government has made it clear that it will not tolerate the existence of illegal structures that serve as breeding grounds for criminal activities.
