A popular commercial driver, Aminu “Migi,” has been shot and killed by suspected bandits along the Funtua–Gusau highway in Zamfara State, adding yet another name to the long list of commuters who have lost their lives on one of Nigeria’s most dangerous roads. The incident occurred on Friday, July 31, 2026, while Migi was returning home to Maru, according to local sources who confirmed the tragedy to journalists on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
Migi, a well‑known figure in the Maru community, was reportedly ambushed by armed bandits while driving along the highway, a route that has become notorious for repeated attacks on travellers, including abductions and killings. The gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, fatally striking him before fleeing the scene. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the modus operandi matches the pattern of bandit operations that have terrorised the Funtua–Gusau corridor for years.
His death has sent shockwaves through the Maru community and beyond, with friends, family and colleagues mourning the loss of a man described as a hardworking and dedicated driver who had earned the trust and respect of many who travelled the route. The tragedy has also reignited calls for urgent government action to secure the highway, which serves as a vital economic lifeline connecting Zamfara to other parts of the country.
The Funtua–Gusau road has become a killing field for bandits, who have carried out repeated attacks on travellers, security forces and commercial vehicles. In October 2025 alone, bandits ambushed a joint security team along the same highway, killing eight personnel. The route has also witnessed mass abductions, with scores of passengers taken hostage and held for ransom. Communities along the corridor have repeatedly appealed to the federal and state governments for military intervention, but the attacks have continued unabated. In April 2026, the Chief of Staff to the Zamfara State Government narrowly escaped death in an ambush on the same road, underscoring the extent of the danger.
Despite the deployment of security forces and ongoing military operations, bandits have maintained their stranglehold on the highway, exploiting the vast forests and rugged terrain that line the route. The killing of Aminu Migi is a stark reminder that no traveller is safe, and that the government’s promise to restore security on the Funtua–Gusau road remains unfulfilled. For the family of the deceased, the loss is immeasurable. For the countless commuters who must navigate this highway daily, the fear is a constant companion. And for the Nigerian state, the question remains: how many more innocent lives must be lost before lasting security is finally restored?
