The Igbo Community Association (ICA) in the Federal Capital Territory has issued a strong warning to political leaders from the Southeast, cautioning them against making sweeping claims that the region has unanimously endorsed President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In a statement released on Monday, August 3, 2026, the association, which is the umbrella socio-cultural organisation representing Igbo residents across Abuja, rejected recent pronouncements by three prominent Igbo politicians who had suggested that the Southeast electorate was fully united behind the President's re-election bid.
The ICA specifically singled out Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma, Minister of Works Engr David Umahi, and Senate Deputy Chief Whip Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, insisting that none of them serves as a spokesperson for the Igbo ethnic group. The association's President-General, Nze Engr Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, described the endorsements as "unauthorised" and a "farce," arguing that the three political figures lacked the mandate to declare a political consensus on behalf of millions of Igbo citizens.
In his statement, Ellis-Ezenekwe said: "The Igbo Community Association FCT wishes to set the record straight for the public and the political establishment that neither Governor Hope Uzodimma, Minister David Umahi, nor Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi serves as the spokesperson for the Igbo ethnic group." He further stated that "elected political appointees and ruling-party actors do not hold a mandate to declare a political consensus on behalf of millions of Igbo citizens. These endorsements represent the personal political preservation strategies of a few office holders seeking to retain favour with the presidency. They do not reflect the true political stance, socio-economic realities, or grassroots sentiment of the South-East region."
The association dismissed assertions that President Tinubu would sweep all five Southeast states in the 2027 election, describing such claims as "completely detached from the prevailing conditions on the ground." According to the ICA, the grassroots population across the Southeast considers the current federal administration to have failed on key economic and administrative metrics, and for this reason, the region will not vote for Tinubu.
The group also urged public officials from the Southeast to focus on their constitutional duties, governance, and the immediate economic needs of their constituents, rather than attempting to trade away the political sovereignty of the Igbo electorate for personal leverage. The ICA's intervention comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ruling All Progressives Congress seeking to consolidate its support across all geopolitical zones, including the Southeast, where the party has historically struggled to gain significant traction.
